• Norwegian: mudderbunnsjørose

Characteristics:

This is one of the larges North Sea anemones. The base may reach a diameter of 25 cm. The body is smooth with a pink or red coloration. It has almost 200 tentacles. It often serves as a shelter for other animals, like the deepsea king crab or the anemone shrimp.

Habitat:

Unlike many other anemones, it does not mind muddy substrate. This is why you are likely to find it in the fjords, close to river estuaries. It is usually found deeper than 20 meters, more frequently below 40.

Distribution:

It is common in the North Atlantic from the British Isles and well beyond the Arctic circle. It is also known from the east coast of North America.
