G. macandrewii is a large, irregular shaped sponge. Apart from the shape it is very similar to the spherical sponge G. baretti. The color is usually white and brown.

It is most frequent deeper than 150 meters, but in some of the sheltered fjords it can be found already on 30-40 meters depth. It thrives on steep walls and other rocky substrate.

G. macandrewii is registered at the west coasts of the British Isles and Norway, as far north as Trøndelag.
