Characteristics:
G. baretti is a large, globular sponge. It may grow to a diameter of 50 cm and a weight reaching 24 kg.Young sponges are closest to having a perfect spherical shape. The color is usually white and brown. A similar, but irregular shaped sponge is the G. macandrewii.
Habitat:
It is most frequent deeper than 30 meters. It is usually found on steep walls or on rocky substrate.
Distribution:
G. Barretti is known from the North-East Atlantic, as far north as the Artic.
