Characteristics:
This orange or yellow sponge are known to take many different forms, including thin sheets and cushions. In Norway, it often takes a globular shape. It is attached to the substrate by a stalk. The surface is smooth and there is usually one or just a few oscules (openings) at the top of the sponge.
Habitat:
S. carnosus prefers steep, rocky surfaces, but is occasionally found on gravel or muddy locations, attached to shells or stones.
Distribution:
It is found in the Arctic, Atlantic coasts of Europe and in the Mediterranean.
