This worm-like sea cucumber may reach a length of 30 cm, but 10 cm is probably more common. It has no tube-feet. Around the mouth there are twelve tentacles, each with 8-11 pairs of digits. The length of the digits increases towards the end of the tentacles. The color of the tube is pink and it has longitudinal muscle-bands.

It is usually found in muddy sand in shallow waters, below the tidal zone and down to 50 meters.

This species is known from the North Sea, around the British Isles and the coasts of Scandinavia.
