Characteristics:

The members of this order are slender fish with the ventral fins placed far back on the body and a forked tail. All salmonids spawn in fresh water, but many species spend much of the life span in the sea. They return the rivers where they where born, only to reproduce.

Taxonomy:

This order includes a single living family, Salmonidae. The Atlantic salmon and trout (genus Salmo) has named the order and family.
