Characteristics:

The colony is usually divided into radiating lobes, widening towards the end. The animals (zooids) are organized in transverse rows in each lobe. The zooids in each row diverge alternately to left and right. The colonies are often encrusting, but may erect from the substrate.

Habitat:

The colonies grow on a different substrates, including algae and rocks. It has been registered on all depths from the subtidal zone to 1900 meters.

Distribution:

T. liliacea is widespread in the Atlantic Ocean, at least on the Northern hemisphere, as well as in the Indian Ocean and Eastern parts of the Pacific.
