The color is bright, vivid green, the stipe is unbranched, 0.4 mm thick and 10-20 cm long. In contrast to the similar C. linum, it is attached to the bottom. It lives only for one year and is usually seen during summer.
It is usually found in the tidal zone and ponds where there is sufficient water exchange.
It is widespread in the Atlantic Ocean.
