This tube or even bell formed sponge can reach a length of 15 cm. It is connected to the base by a hard, but flexible stalk. It may consist of more than one tube. The color may be grey, beige, yellow or orange. The surface is smooth.
It can be found in a wide range of habitats, on exposed as well as sheltered locations. It is usually attached to some hard surface, like rocks or shells. It is typical for steep rock faces.
H. urceolus is wide-spread in the North-East Atlantic.
