Characteristics:
G. lacunosa forms a somewhat flattened, spherical structure of fine white or off-white tubes. A look in a microscope reveals that the tube walls are smooth. The diameter of the entire sponge is less than 3 cm. It is attached to the substrate by a thin stalk.
Habitat:
G. lacunosa prefers hard substrate and is often seen on steep, rocky slopes. It is most common on relatively shallow depths, down to 200 meters.
Distribution:
It is well known in the East Atlantic, from the Mediterranean in the South, to the Arctic in the north.
