The grey may reach a length of 28 mm. The mantle is covered by fine, rounded granules and is relatively narrow. The shell is making up 75% of the animal width. The color is very variable, including shades of brown, orange, red, blue, green, white or black. It is easily confused with the similar L. asellus. The mantle of L. cinerea is slightly narrower and has a different texture.
It is very common under rocks in shallow water, but has been found as deep as 275 meters.
It is abundant along the European coasts, from Lofoten in Norway to the Mediterranean.
