The grey top shell has a height of less than 1.6 cm. The shell is coned and has five or six whorls. The color tends to vary a bit with the surroundings, but is usually yellow or grey with brown stripes. The opening is oval shaped.

It is found from just below the tidal zone and down to 130 meters. It is often sitting upon or under rocks or sometimes on seaweed or algae.

The grey top shell is distributed from the Straits of Gibraltar to Norway and Iceland. It is abundant in the North Sea, including the British Isles.
