The crosswise ridges and the bean-shaped shell are typical features of the cowries. The northern cowrie is a small, the length rarely exceeds 1 cm. The shell opening (aperture) is long and narrow. The shell itself is reddish brown, beige or almost white. The mantle wrapped around the shell may have brown blotches. The shell itself does not have any spots, unlike the spotted cowrie.
It is often found on rocky locations, from subtidal to 1000 meters depth.
It is registered in the North-East Atlantic Ocean, from Norway to the Mediterranean, most frequent in the northern regions.
